Benefits of Day Options Programs for the Elderly and Disabled

Jan 25, 2024 | Breaking News

There are many positive benefits associated with Day Options programs, like KompleteCare’s KC Community, such as increasing social and community participation, promoting independence, expanding communication skills, and building essential life skills.

Day Options programs provide a range of activities to help participants socialise as part of a group while developing meaningful life skills to help them live fuller, more independent lives. They are designed to help them gain confidence in social situations and become more comfortable with being in a group and out in the community.

Day Options programs increase social and community participation.

Community participation is essential and beneficial for people of all ages and abilities. Through Day Options programs, participants are able to get out of their comfort zone and meet new people in a safe and supported environment. Group trips, fitness classes and outdoor activities give participants a great opportunity to take a break from their daily routine, stay active, and get to know their greater community.

As part of our Term One calendar, KC Community includes at least one community activity per week, whether it be a group trip or an outdoor adventure. This includes a range of local locations such as local parks and gardens, aquatic centres, fruit picking and petting zoos.

Day Options programs can help participants learn and build new skills

Through Day Options, participants will undertake a range of skill-building activities such as arts and crafts, gardening, music, cooking and life skills.

Everyone can benefit from learning new skills, regardless of their age or ability. Some of the benefits associated with skill building include improved fine motor skills, increased confidence, improved self-esteem, and enhanced mental well-being.

Day Options programs help promote independence.

We all deserve the opportunity to be independent and make our own decisions. Promoting and supporting independence for the elderly or those living with a disability means they can do more for themselves and have greater control over their lives. This promotes a sense of well-being, self-esteem, and confidence.

At KC Community, one of our activities, ‘Life Hacks’, focuses on developing life skills through fun and stimulating activities. This includes everyday essentials such as what to do in an emergency, maintaining good health, money handling and computer skills. Our ‘Master Cooks’ activity assists them in learning how to cook various healthy meals, as well as safe food handling and nutrition information. They are given the opportunity to learn important life skills, giving them more confidence in their day-to-day life.

Day Options programs help participants expand their communication skills.

Having effective communication skills can be beneficial for anyone of any age or ability and help them feel more confident in social situations and within the community. They can also help individuals build trust and stronger relationships. Day Options allows participants to develop their communication skills through social activities, giving them the opportunity to connect with others who may have similar challenges or interests.

For people living with a disability, social interactions can help develop their communication skills by practising eye contact, developing listening skills, learning empathy, and practising verbal communication. KC Community provides a safe and welcoming place to interact with other people and build friendships in an environment where they are supported.

KompleteCare’s Day Options Program, KC Community

KompleteCare has kicked off the year with KC Community, our Day Options program tailored especially for NDIS and Home Care Package participants. Our main goals at KompleteCare are to assist participants in developing their skills and increasing their independence. We have collaborated with Support Coordinators, Client Services Managers, and clients to design a program offering a variety of activities to maintain and learn new life skills, increase community participation, and increase communication skills and relationship building within a social setting.

Our team of KompleteCare Home Support Workers are all rigorously trained and passionate, with a 4:1 care ratio to make sure our participants are fully supported. KC Community operates weekly from Tuesday to Friday in 9-week terms, with morning sessions for our Home Care Package participants and afternoon sessions for our NDIS participants.
