Escape the Chill: 8 things you can do indoors to escape the cold this winter.

Jun 22, 2023 | Breaking News

Now that we’re in June, the cold is finally setting in as winter is well and truly upon us. For some people, the cold winter months are a chance to get outside and enjoy the seasonal nature and wildlife. But there comes a time when no amount of bundling up can keep even the most outdoorsy of people from staying indoors.

But staying in doesn’t need to be a drag, and research shows that keeping busy can help prevent the blues. That’s why KompleteCare has rounded up a selection of the best ways you can occupy your time while you’re stuck indoors. Whether you choose to stay in and do something at home or escape the cold in the comfort of an art class or the theatre, we’ve got something for you.

1. Bake a loaf of bread.
Let’s turn the clock back to 2020, when we were all stuck inside, and everyone on TikTok was baking homemade bread. Use your time inside to throw it back and make your own! Recipes range from easy to difficult (sourdough requires more effort), and it’ll make your house smell like heaven! Not to mention, there’s nothing quite like a thick slice of warm homemade bread with butter.

2. Do an art class.
Paint-and-sip classes are all the rage at the moment, and there’s really no feeling like making your own masterpiece. If painting isn’t for you, you could try a pottery class, a glass-blowing class, or a mosaic class. Get together with some friends and create your very own art pieces (and support a local business in the process).

3. See a show.
Get out of the cold and into some culture by paying a local theatre or musical a visit this winter. The Adelaide Cabaret Festival (the biggest cabaret festival in the world, FYI) is currently on for the duration of June and hosts a wide variety of cabaret acts, so there is truly something for everyone. If you don’t have any theatres or shows near you (or would rather stay in), you could stream a performance on YouTube or Netflix instead. Did someone say the 2003 version of the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical Wicked?!

4. Plan your next holiday.
Torrential rains have you stuck indoors all day? Think ahead and dream about summer by planning a warm-weather holiday! Staring at tropical getaways and sandy shores will put your brain in a sunnier spot. Get all the tricky planning out of the way and fantasize about lying on a beach in the sun somewhere.

5. Try knitting or crocheting.
It sounds cheesy and stereotypical, but what better time to take up a new skill other than when you have literally nothing else to do? Also, it’s already scarf season, so you might as well take the opportunity to try and make one yourself! Knitting can be a fun activity to keep your hands busy, and you could watch a movie or binge a show at the same time!

6. Make some soup.
Boiling up a pot of soup is not only a great cold-weather activity but also a great cold-weather food! Not to mention it’s also a great way to clear out your fridge or pantry and use up some extra veggies you’ve got in the fridge. If you’re not sure what soup you want to make, you should try the chicken noodle soup we made over on our TikTok. You could even pair it with that homemade bread you made earlier in the article!

7. Visit an escape room.
Escape rooms are a great way to connect with friends or family while exercising your brain and practising your teamwork skills at the same time! They’ve become more and more popular over the past few years, meaning they’re easier to find locally. A lot of them also have themes, so you can pretend you’re part of your favourite movie at the same time!

8. Do some self-care.
Sometimes the best way to spend a frosty day indoors is to rug up and do something for yourself. Use the time to practice some self-care and do something that’s just for YOU. You could take a nice hot bath or shower, snuggle up by the fire and read a book, binge your favourite show or movies, or do a face mask, to name a few.
