More extensive structural modifications, such as removing or altering load-bearing walls, can also be undertaken to enhance the flow and functionality of a space.
Eligibility Criteria for Home Modifications
Home Modifications may be funded through your NDIS or Home Care package if you:
- Experience safety concerns or have difficulty moving around your home.
- Encounter challenges with personal care, such as using your shower.
- Are unable to access essential rooms in your home.
- Face obstacles to achieving your goals at home due to your disability.
- Require adjustments to your home to ensure the safety of your caregivers while they support you.
NDIS Home Modifications
NDIS home modifications are typically funded through the Core Supports budget, Home Modifications budget or NDIS Assistive Technology budget, depending on the complexity of the modifications required.
Aged Care Home Modifications
Aged Care Home modifications can often be funded directly from your Home Care Package. If complex home modifications are required your personal client services manager can organise the necessary assessments to assist you in applying for additional funding or help you explore other funding options.

Safety Rails
Safety rails play a crucial role in reducing the risk of falls by providing added support, balance and stability. Commonly installed in bathrooms to assist with transitions to the toilet, shower, or bath, as well as alongside steps and stairways, safety rails can be fitted both internally and externally to ensure safety and accessibility throughout the home.
Ramps & Wheelchair Ramps
Ramps provide a smooth and accessible transition between the different levels inside or outside of the home making it easier for those with mobility issues to move around independently. Both temporary and permanent ramps are common home modifications for wheelchair users and most access ramps have a non-slip surface for added safety.
Temporary & Permanent Steps
Platform steps and half steps are common home modifications for individuals with mobility issues who do not require a wheelchair. These modifications reduce the height threshold, making it easier and safer to transition between different levels. Half steps and platform steps are commonly used to make accessing the home easier and portable steps may be used to help with transitions in and out of bed or in and out of a car.
Hoists
Portable hoists and ceiling hoists are vital home modification for individuals who require assistance with transfers. Portable hoists are ideal for use in bedrooms and bathrooms where space may be limited, offering a flexible solution for transfers. On the other hand, ceiling hoists provide a more permanent and efficient way to move between rooms, enhancing safety and independence within the home.
Wheelchair Lifts
Platform lifts, also known as wheelchair lifts, are commonly installed to provide wheelchair access in areas where steep inclines prevent the use of ramps. Lifts can be installed internally or externally, offering a convenient and safe solution to move between the different levels of a home.
Doorway Widening
Doorway widening is a common home modification for wheelchair users. Whilst a standard wheelchair is 635mm wide, doorways need to have an unobstructed opening of at least 850mm to ensure ease of use and accessibility.
